Position Summary:

The Victim Advocate for Madison College and Edgewood College works as a part of the advocacy team, and is responsible for campus outreach, education, crisis intervention, emotional support, medical advocacy, legal advocacy and campus advocacy for survivors of sexual violence who are students, staff, or community members who have easier access to offices located at those two institutions.  This position offers a supportive environment for clients to talk about experiences and feelings related to sexual assault and helps clients identify challenges and build on their strengths and abilities.  Advocates do not offer psychological evaluation, diagnoses or testing.  The position advocates for victims of sexual violence through campus and legal systems, medical systems, Title IX and other systems that are related to the survivors healing and/or justice. All RCC employees must be committed to providing services with and to a variety of cultures outside of one’s own with cultural awareness, sensitivity and humility. This position carefully coordinates with the Victim Advocate for UW Madison College Campus and the Direct Service Supervision Coordinator, to whom the position reports.

Primary Position Duties:

Individual and Systems Advocacy

  • Provide crisis intervention and advocacy to victims of sexual violence, as well as their support networks.

  • Provide accurate and up-to-date information and referrals to callers and clients.

  • Provide accompaniment and advocacy to victims of sexual assault who engage in the campus disciplinary proceedings.

  • Provide legal and medical advocacy to victims of sexual assault.

  • Remain informed on current laws, policies and procedures related to academic or campus response, as well as criminal and civil proceedings.  This includes being informed on Title IX and the Federal Clery Act.

  • Collaborate with organizations and agencies such as law enforcement, District Attorney's Office, Forensic Nurse Examiner program, the Dean of Students Offices, the offices of Student Conduct, student services, and community services to ensure full access to all services the survivor needs related to healing and justice related to sexual assault.

Outreach

  • Maintain strong working relationships with staff and programs at Madison College and Edgewood College, and ensure agency representation at appropriate campus-related events.

  • Participate in campus meetings and work groups as they pertain to sexual assault prevention and services.

  • Design, facilitate and present outreach, education and professional trainings to faculty, staff, leadership and students at Madison College and Edgewood College.

Program and General

  • Regular Helpline shifts

  • Attend fundraising and outreach events

  • Attend Volunteer training as a new employee

  • Trainings for staff and volunteers about job position

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of short, mid and long range program goals that further RCC's strategic plan.

  • Attend regular staff meetings and professional development, and maintain regular contact with staff and supervisor.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Skills:

Required Qualifications

  • Experience or education in social work, psychology or human services.

  • Commitment to supporting RCC’s values of serving all survivors in Dane County, and an understanding of privilege and oppression and its impact on client needs and services.

  • Comfort and competence in working independently as well as part of a team.

  • Satisfactory criminal background check.

  • Commitment to maintaining client confidentiality.

  • Access to private transportation and appropriate insurance.

  • Flexible work hours.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated understanding of sexual violence and related issues.

  • Knowledge of Madison College and Edgewood campus resources, as well as local and national resources.

  • Experience and/or training in providing crisis intervention services, client advocacy, and emotional support, preferably to victims of sexual violence.

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish.
